Dear Sistema Global community,

I am very pleased to announce the publication of an update to the Literature Review of El Sistema and Sistema-inspired Programs. This first and only foundation survey of the worldwide Sistema field has been revised with new findings.

This winter 2016 version includes new scholarly publications on El Sistema. Our team hopes the new data will inform and support the work of hundreds of local programs worldwide.

This growing depth of written material reflects the international growth of El Sistema and expanding understanding of what El Sistema-inspired work looks like in many social contexts. This growing body of critically reflective thinking addresses:

– What makes ‘Sistema’ distinctive?
– How does it relate to the wider music education landscape?
– How can the pedagogical practices developed in Sistema-inspired contexts be delivered to benefit all?

Please download your copy of the literature review update at www.sistemaglobal.org/litreview.

As usual, we welcome any feedback and comments on the download page, or through the Sistema Global LinkedIn Group: www.sistemaglobal.org/linkedin. In particular, please send any suggestions on how we can continue to make El Sistema related research more accessible, through the literature review or other means.

I acknowledge and deeply appreciate the continued leadership of Dr. Andrea Creech of The Institute of Education, University College London, and her distinguished team in writing and revising this literature review.

Watch an interview with Andrea discussing the literature review here! https://youtu.be/PC8c5A-Sa6A.

Very best regards,

Glenn Thomas

Founding Director

    Excellent article:

“Thinking Beyond the Myths and Misconceptions of Talent: Creating Music Education Policy that Advances Music’s Essential Contribution to Twenty-First-Century Teaching and Learning” Lawrence Scripp et al. in Arts Education Policy Review May 2013 (114:2, 54-102)

    Also:
if you missed the WBUR FM show on the Conservatory Lab Charter School El Sistema Program, you can listen to the podcast on this link to hear Larry Scripp, Howard Gardner and others discuss the progress of one of the few in-school El Sistema programs in the U.S. http://www.radioopensource.org/lab-charter

Thank you Andrea. I found this link to the article: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/10632913.2013.769825 It’s expensive, but perhaps your local university library has access- is that right Andrea? Glenn Thomas

  2. […] El Sistema, the Venezuelan music education programme that claims to transform lives through intensive participation in orchestra and choir, has again been in the news. In a preview to his forthcoming book based on a year of ethnographic fieldwork in Venezuela, Geoff Baker questions whether the social change claims can really be supported with evidence and critiques the pedagogy that underpins El Sistema. Baker’s book promises to add a critical perspective to a growing body of research, evaluation and theoretical critiques reviewed and summarised in our recent international review of evidence relating to El Sistema and Sistema-inspired programmes.
